This course offers an in-depth introduction to the fundamental techniques and tactics of Bolognese fencing. It focuses on the one-handed sword techniques as presented in Opera Nova de Achille Marozzo Bolognese, Maestro Generale de L'arte de L'armi (A New Work by Achille Marozzo of Bologna, General Master of the Art of Arms) 1536 book’s chapters 94-100: Combat with the Unaccompanied Sword, One-on-One. Through a series of seven plays—four offensive and three defensive—along with their accompanying exercises and demonstrations, students will explore the foundational principles of Bolognese swordsmanship. They will gain a clear understanding of Marozzo’s method of fighting in earnest with a sharp sword, both in the essential plays and in the tactics they contain.
By the end of the course, participants will have a strong understanding on the principles of fighting according to Marozzo’s method both as an attacker and defender. This course is useful both as the first step of understanding the Bolognese fencing method and its tactic and as a module of practical and realistic fencing plays and tactics for those looking to expand their understanding of Italian renaissance fencing through fighting in earnest with live steel.
The course is divided into 13 sessions designed to guide the participant through the plays in a structured manner with demonstrations and breakdowns of the seven plays, their variations and the supporting exercises.
This course contains 120 minutes of content, offering a practical in-depth walkthrough for training the form both alone and with a partner.
Whether you are just beginning your journey into historical fencing or seeking to deepen your understanding and application of Bolognese swordsmanship, this course provides the tools and insights needed to build a strong foundation for further growth and mastery.
